Why does Psalm 88 have two superscriptions?
It’s a small detail most readers skip—but it opens up a much bigger story. Psalm 88 is one of the bleakest Psalms in the Bible, offering almost no resolution. Psalm 89 begins with confidence and joy in God’s covenant with David. Yet the ending of Psalm 89 sounds very different: the promises seem broken, and the psalmist is left pleading.
These Psalms weren’t written all at once. They reflect faith lived out across generations. Scripture lets joy and anguish sit side by side—and asks us to read them together.
That kind of insight only emerges through slow, careful attention to Hebrew poetry and structure. At Scriptura, that’s the work we love to do—and to share with anyone who wants to read the Bible more deeply.
If you’re curious to see how this kind of study connects to real people and real communities, you’re warmly invited to join us on February 12 for Making a Difference—a gathering where learners, supporters, and practitioners listen and learn together.
