ALEX MERCADO
PRODUCT DISCOVERY LEAD
MEET ALEX
Alex leads product discovery at Scriptura. Scriptura’s scholars have proven the value of delivering rigorous Hebrew scholarship for translation teams in an accessible form with Psalms: Layer by Layer. Alex’s job is to understand and plan what’s needed next so the people who need it most can find it, trust it, and use it in the process of real translation work.
Alex brings sixteen years in Bible translation technology, from a help desk in Cameroon, to teaching technology in Kenya, to co-leading the redesign of Paratext, the primary software translators use to draft and check Scripture.
Alex lives in the mountains of Costa Rica with his wife, Megan, and their son, Pax.
WHY THIS WORK MATTERS
Psalms is requested second only to the Gospels in new translations, yet for 1.5 billion people there are no Psalms in their language.
The first version of Scriptura’s work proved something important: people want this content, and it helps translators preserve the accuracy and beauty of Hebrew poetry so that more people can see God for themselves in Scripture. The first book of the Psalms is nearly complete, and now it’s time for it to mature as a product. Early research by Megan Mercado identified our starting personas—clusters of people who need different things from these resources. Discovery goes the next step: it finds what keeps them from using the content today, and it decides what to keep, change, build, or stop. Then comes the work of designing and building it, whether that is a better website, a Paratext extension, or something we haven’t imagined yet.
Because every team that adopts a good tool multiplies its impact, the aim is Scripture that is not only more available but more moving and faithful to what the text says about God.
WHAT YOUR SUPPORT MAKES POSSIBLE
Alex’s work with Scriptura is funded by personal donor support. Donor support is what lets him work pro bono for the organizations doing the most good, and keep serving Bible translation as a whole:
- Discovering what’s next to build for Scriptura’s Psalms resources.
- Continued work in designing and building tools for Bible translation and minority language communities.
Alex’s work is funded through personal donor support, designated toward Alex Mercado staff support.
