Ninety Minutes, Then Ninety More

Southeast Asia · August 24 – September 4, 2026
OBT Consultant-in-Training Workshop, Psalms

It was not on the schedule. The workshop’s ethnoarts specialists had spent two weeks interpreting for everyone else, moving between languages so the teams could work — which meant they had never once been walked through the process themselves. So one of the teachers added a session for them on the spot, on Psalm 100.

The teacher built the internalization plan in ninety minutes. She taught it in ninety more. And ninety minutes after that, three groups had three finished songs.

The speed is the easy thing to notice, and it is not the point. What the teacher kept pressing was that the plan was transferable — that people who had never done this before could step inside a psalm and come out the other side with something real, in an afternoon, because the path in had been built for them. The room caught fire over Psalm 100, including people in it who spoke no English at all. One of the ethnoarts specialists — a man who works with artistic form for a living — said he could not imagine anything easier to step inside than what they had just done.
